The Bureau of Cybercrime and Intellectual Property Rights often arrests, interrogates and/or physically attacks those that are critical of the government and religious establishment.

The country has stringent defamation laws, stemming from the Penal Code. A number of arrests have taken place on social media users, for posts critical of officials and religious figures.

Internet penetration is currently 73% and mobile penetration is 88%. There have been efforts to improve infrastructure, including schemes to improve the disparity between urban and rural areas.
